The Last Of Us
The Last Of Us is a survival action-adventure video game by Naughty Dog studios for the Sony PlayStation 3. It is set in a modern world that is decimated by a plague. The game is told to be “more realistic” than other games by Naughty Dog. It was released worldwide on June 14th, 2013. The game is a PS 3 exclusive.
The idea for the game came up when creative director Neil Druckmann watched a video segment of the cordyceps fungus on Discovery’s Planet Earth series. This, along with the fact that he was thinking about writing a graphic novel about a father-daughter zombie tale brought forth the idea of developing The Last of Us.
The Last of Us follows the journey of an adult Joel and young Ellie and is set across a post-apocalyptic United States. The game uses a third-person view of Joel, who is controlled by the player, while Ellie is controlled by an AI. The game involves both weapons and melee combat. It will also feature a unique cover system. The player encounters, and fights, Infected humans and hostile Survivors. The game features a “dynamic stealth” system. This allows for creative stealth tactics and encounters to which enemies react differently, thus creating a unique and intense experience each time.
The story is set 20 years after a fungal outbreak that killed many. Survivors now reside in quarantine zones controlled by a dictatorial US military. Joel, a fugitive within one of the quarantine zones, promises an old friend that he will get the young girl, Ellie, away from the harsh regime. They begin their journey through the ravaged wastes of the USA, avoiding the Infected and hostile Survivors alike. The military pursues them as well, to find Ellie and bring her back under their power.
